The Latinos in Education Foco is a research community within El Instituto that aims to support junior tenure-track faculty through the tenure process by providing opportunities for mentorship, networking, professional development, and financial support for research endeavors.
2017 Platica with Professor Ana Martinez Aleman
On April 12, 2017 Professor Ana Martinez Aleman, Associate Dean for Faculty and Professor of Educational Leadership and Higher Education at Boston College, spoke on “The Impact of Race on College Teaching and Learning” at UConn’s Student Union. Professor Martinez Aleman’s scholarship focuses on the critical study of gender, race and ethnicity in higher education. Currently she is examining the use of Web 2.0 technologies to promote engagement among first generation college students, and is featured in Technology and Engagement: Making Technology Work for First Generation College Studies (2017). Her work on racial discourse and social media among college students appears in The Journal of College Student Development and Change: The Magazine of Higher Education.
2016 Platica with Professor Stella Flores
On April 15, 2016, El Foco hosted Dr. Stella Flores, Associate Professor of Higher Education at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University, to El Instituto to spearhead a mentoring workshop intended to support junior faculty members’ scholarly work and experience in the tenure process. As part of this initiative, El Foco held a morning session with Dr. Flores who provided read a scholarly piece (an article or chapter) or research narrative written by each of the four members and provided feedback to each member on a piece of research. She also led a platica (informal conversation) on the status of Latin@s in Education. The platica was held at the Puerto Rican Latin American Cultural Center (PRLACC) and was co-hosted by PRLAAC and the Department of Educational Leadership in the Neag School of Education.
